Upcycled black jersey t-shirts, synthetic lace, and assorted hardware with beaded black plastic helmet
My first project for my BA Fashion Print course in 2019 which is close to my heart due to its sensitive subject; the Anto-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement protests in Hong Kong from 2019-2020. I hoped to channel my city’s frustrations, my personal anxieties, and the uncertainty of the political and cultural future of our post-colonial city into a textile-based response in tribute. The red symbolises each terrible streak of blood on body-strewn streets, every scarred face, every torn limb and sinew. Black t-shirts were draped in reference to the shirts worn to demarcate one’s political views, as well as the protective helmets worn by protesters in the depths of the fray.
While it is merely a single dress, I wanted to acknowledge all this pain and suffering and focus instead on small rays of hope by celebrating the bravery and determination of today’s youth despite the deafening cacaphony of social and political rage.
