CONCEPT:I spent a lot of my childhood wading along the beaches of Hong Kong. It might sound contradictory to the dystopian picture of skyscraper buildings and glimmering neon lights when most people think of this particular city, but that’s exactly why I often escaped to the seaside whenever times were rough.As a child, I often wondered what it would be like if I let the ocean current take me deep down forever and I lived there permanently submerged; eventually adapting and becoming one with the sea pressure. To reflect this, the avatar has been modelled with prints that I developed to mimic barnacles and algae growing on her body, and her skin has taken on a holographic sheen akin to that of chromatophores in squid skin. Seeing my MRI brain scans up close made me realize how much I often take for granted, and how wondrous our bodies can be - as much as we try to control and decipher it, there's still a lot we don't know about ourselves. Like falling in love with my ‘ugly baby’; other people may not appreciate the complexity of my brain, but in that moment I did.&nbsp; I thought that this quote from Shakespeare's Othello, "Our Bodies are Gardens, to Which Our Wills are Gardeners", was particularly apt - speaking not only to the idea of self-discipline and control, but also to the unexpected turns of life and most of all, becoming catalyst for the idea of interpreting what plants might be metaphorically grown in my own 'Garden of Eden'. I took the shapes of my internal organs as a reference to make something beautiful out of their disturbing shapes, so that other people could appreciate their beauty through trompe l'oeil (trick of the eye) 'floral' prints. I also experimented with imaging fruit and vegetable cells under a microscope and using them as almost new-age polka dots, and feeding my photos directly into generative AI (Midjourney) for one particular look so that I could control its output in a more ethical way. Existing flowers are thus forced into into a elegant yet somewhat bizarre and uncanny representation of the natural world, in a comment on life’s transience and the intersection of technology and traditional craft. Printed on organza layered on duchess satin and modern fabrics like neoprene to create a shimmering optical mirage, these explosions of colour are carefully positioned over the body to suggesting an anatomical garden. Wearable and Experimental Clothes for a Vivid, Eventful LifestyleThe collection is overall intended to complement the needs of a maximalist, contemporary lifestyle – wearable and highly elegant yet theatrically sumptuous in colour and proportion when required for an evening soirée – for a woman who is defiant in the face of adversity. Modular, versatile separates facilitate dressing up or down no matter the occasion, and the sensuality of the female waist is the focus of attention, accentuated through sculpting, clean tailoring with a touch of dramatic malevolence seen in flared trousers and explosive pleating. Coat collars as seen in the Cephalus Suit and the blooming flowerbud sleeves paired with the Anthocyane Evening Dress are cut boldly for maximal impact and a confident air, while neoprene and layers of organza stacked on top of one another add textural complexity and modernity. Our Bodies Are Gardens is Cherie’s statement about the nature of today’s industry where artisanal craftsmanship has been lost in preference for quick fix clothing, and an appeal to encourage change towards circular, sustainable consumer behaviours. She introduces this into her work through engineered digital prints to reduce fabric usage and dye, printed on recycled and carefully selected deadstock fabrics in accordance. Each piece is made and finished by hand, never compromising on aesthetic vision and quality. Ultimately, Cherie hopes to bring joy to her clients through pieces that serve as serious conversation starters and cherished, expressive heirlooms that make women feel elegant, alive, and strong in uploading the engineered digital print graphics for each into CLO3D software and changing the properties of the fabrics and beads for each to match accordingly to the true weights of each fabric. As a student this was a fantastic way of mocking up ideas which I was not sure of, so I could eliminate them in the design process. In the same vein, here is Look 4 but with the prints of the suit rendered in fur instead of velvet to show alternate possibilities. Inspired by the push-and-pull feelings of a dual heritage and the implications it can have throughout one’s life, I drew on traditional Chinese elements such as ceramics used for Buddhist altars of worship, and lanterns aggressively enlarged to proportions that constrict the wearer’s movement and threaten to engulf them. The accessories include sculpted upcycled heels and tie dyed stockings to translate the painful practice of ancient Chinese footbinding for upper class women into a modern context and reflecting on how modern standards of beauty are still tortuous and unattainable but in a different way. Our team was inspired by uranium glassware, elaborate food plating, and the decadent jewels of socialites at the time. Every garment was made with sustainability at the forefront and included bioplastic textiles that I had developed in lieu of traditional leathers and plastics, which were also incorporated into accessories such as hats, pendants, and bags. After several fittings and a lengthy toiling process, this outfit was created around the idea of overconsumption and indulgence based on textural amateur and deliberately psychedelic-skewing cakes on Instagram and French artist Vincent Olinet’s year-old cakes and sourdough shelves. I wanted to explore this through my print designs, as Grayson wanted a garment that was lightweight and easily dry-cleaned - which meant that certain fabric texture manipulations i.e. coating surfaces in other materials such as latex, would not be user-friendly. Through learning to compromise and accommodate my designs into something more wearable in day-to-day life, it was a great project to explore other skills such as laser-cutting and accessory design. Ultrasuede and cotton corset top and distressed ruffle skirt made using ultrasuede and cotton sponsored by TORAY® with handmade jewelry and embroidered detailing Mask created and sculpted in collaboration with fine artist Jennifer Yun Chen-Tu I came to London alone when I was 17 for university, and during my first year I felt isolated and confused because of how different my day-to-day life had become. The concept of this project draws on my feelings of alienation by looking at pop culture tales of inventors creating or manipulating their own companions such as in The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, Frankenstein, and the Phantom of The Opera, and building a character dressed in white as my own best friend. The look is inspired by the traditional Portuguese Azorean hoods worn by married women in the Azores Islands, up until the 1930s. I loved the beautiful, haunting shape of the hood, and wanted to also incorporate the joyfulness of the tile art that I saw in Lisbon during a visit there in June. The quilted, ‘tile’ effect creates almost a cocoon of comfort, sheltering the wearer from the outside and can be grasped inside to become a vortex-like adornment on the shoulders. <img width="675"
